That double coat is waterproof on the outside. Your thick-coated dog probably loves rain walks. Just dry the undercoat thoroughly when you're home — trapped moisture causes hot spots.
After a rain walk, your thick-coated dog looks fine on the surface but the undercoat is wet. Towel the undercoat thoroughly or use a blow dryer — damp undercoat causes hot spots and musty smell.
Rain soaks through the outer coat and creates a damp microclimate against the skin where yeast and bacteria multiply. If your thick-coated dog smells musty after rainy days, it's a skin infection brewing. Dry the undercoat thoroughly.
Most thick-coated dogs don't mind rain, which makes it great training weather. Fewer people at the park means fewer distractions. Work on the skills that need a quieter environment.
