Pomeranian Shedding: How Much & When They Shed Most

That iconic fluffy Pomeranian look comes from a dense double coat: a short, thick undercoat and a longer, harsher outer coat that stands off the body. This coat structure is a miniaturized version of their Arctic sled dog ancestors (Pomeranians are descended from large Spitz-type working dogs).

The undercoat is the primary shedding source. It's cotton-like in texture and incredibly dense — when it sheds, it comes out in clumps and tufts. The outer guard hairs shed less frequently but are longer and more visible when they fall.

Because the coat is so dense relative to the dog's body size, Pomeranians produce a disproportionate amount of shed fur. A single Pom can shed enough undercoat during blowout season to fill a large ziplock bag per brushing session.

Pomeranian owners need to know about the "puppy uglies" — a dramatic coat transition that happens between 4 and 10 months of age.

During this phase, a Pomeranian puppy sheds their soft baby coat and grows in their adult double coat. The result is a patchy, scraggly-looking dog that barely resembles the fluffy ball of fur you brought home. One side may shed before the other. They can look genuinely scraggly for weeks.

This is completely normal and not a health concern. The adult coat grows in gradually over several months. By 12 to 15 months, most Pomeranians have their full adult coat. Some owners panic during the puppy uglies and rush to the vet — save yourself the visit. It's just a Pom being a Pom.

During this phase, gentle daily brushing helps remove the shedding baby coat and encourages healthy adult coat growth. Don't bathe excessively — the skin is already going through a lot.

Adult Pomeranians experience two major coat blowouts per year:

Spring (March through May): The dense winter undercoat sheds out. This is the heavier blowout. Expect 2 to 4 weeks of intense shedding where tufts of undercoat come out with every touch. Daily brushing is non-negotiable during this period.

Fall (September through November): The summer coat sheds to make room for the thicker winter undercoat. Usually 2 to 3 weeks of heavy shedding.

Female Pomeranians who are unspayed may also shed heavily after heat cycles, adding an extra shedding event beyond the seasonal pattern. Spayed females and males typically stick to the twice-yearly blowout schedule.

Outside of blowout season, Pomeranians still shed daily — just at a more manageable level. There is no time of year when a Pomeranian doesn't shed at all.

Pomeranians need consistent grooming to prevent matting and manage shedding:

Daily brushing during blowout: Use a slicker brush first to work through the outer coat, then a small undercoat rake or comb to pull out loose undercoat. Brush in sections, lifting the outer coat to reach the undercoat beneath. 10 to 15 minutes per session.

Regular maintenance (non-blowout): Brush 3 to 4 times per week. Focus on areas prone to matting — behind the ears, under the arms, and around the rear.

Bathing: Every 4 to 6 weeks. Use a high-quality dog shampoo and conditioner. Blow-dry thoroughly (never leave a Pomeranian to air-dry — their dense coat holds moisture for hours and can develop mildew and hot spots). The blow-dry itself loosens a significant amount of dead undercoat.

Never shave a Pomeranian: Like all double-coated breeds, shaving removes their insulation and UV protection. The coat may grow back incorrectly — uneven, patchy, or with a different texture. The "lion cut" myth that it helps with shedding or heat is false. The undercoat grows back faster than the guard hairs, leading to a woolly, matting-prone texture.
