Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Heartworm Guide — Prevention, Cost & Seasonal Risk

All Cavalier King Charles Spaniels need heartworm prevention. Mosquitoes transmit heartworm larvae with a single bite, and treatment is expensive and risky.

Why Cavalier King Charles Spaniels Are More Vulnerable

Mosquitoes become active above 50°F and peak when temperatures reach 70-80°F with recent rain. A single mosquito bite can transmit heartworm larvae. The larvae take 6-7 months to mature into adult worms that live in the heart and lungs. By the time symptoms appear, the disease is advanced.

What to Do

  • 1.Year-round heartworm prevention medication (monthly or injectable)
  • 2.Annual heartworm test at your vet
  • 3.Avoid walks at dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active
  • 4.Eliminate standing water around your home
  • 5.Use pet-safe mosquito repellent for extended outdoor time

Risks to Watch For

  • Heartworm disease — potentially fatal if untreated
  • Treatment costs $1,000-$3,000+ and requires weeks of exercise restriction
  • Coughing, lethargy, and exercise intolerance as early symptoms
  • Heart failure in advanced cases
