Seasonal & Weather Details
Allergy Season▾
Shih Tzus are very allergy-prone. Their long, flowing coat (even when trimmed) traps pollen, dust, and moisture. Their flat face means irritants get into their eyes easily. Wipe their face and paws after every walk. Eye staining worsens during allergy season.
Storms & Anxiety▾
Shih Tzus are often anxious during storms — they're companion dogs bred to be on someone's lap, and thunder sends them straight there. Their small size makes storms feel massive. A warm blanket and your presence are usually all they need.
Rain & Wet Weather▾
Shih Tzus and rain are a bad combo. Their long coat absorbs water, their flat face collects raindrops, and their small size means they chill fast. A rain jacket plus avoiding puddles is the minimum. Most Shih Tzus will refuse to walk in anything more than a drizzle.
Does Your Shih Tzu Need a Coat?▾
Shih Tzus have a long double coat that needs daily maintenance. Despite the length, it doesn't insulate as well as true thick-coat breeds. They need a sweater below 40°F. In heat, their flat face is the bottleneck — they overheat at 75°F regardless of coat length.
Breed Insights
“Flat-nosed breeds breathe through what's essentially a straw. They can't cool air fast enough when it's warm.”
“Bulldogs are 14x more likely to suffer heat stroke than Labs. French Bulldogs are 6x more likely.”
“Shih Tzus have a double whammy: flat face means they can't cool efficiently, and their long coat traps the heat they can't expel. It's the worst of both worlds in summer.”
“Originally bred as palace dogs in Chinese courts — their weather tolerance reflects a life of indoor luxury, not outdoor work.”
More Flat-Faced Breeds
French Bulldog
French Bulldogs are the most weather-sensitive popular breed. Their flat face means they can't cool down efficiently, and their thin coat means they can't stay warm. I keep a close eye on these ones.
Pug
Pugs are loveable but fragile in weather extremes. Heat is their biggest enemy — that flat face makes cooling down nearly impossible. Cold isn't great either. I always flag the tight windows for these guys.
Bulldog
Bulldogs are the breed I worry about most in heat. They're 14x more likely to suffer heat stroke than a Lab. If it feels warm to you, it's already too warm for your Bulldog.
Boston Terrier
Boston Terriers pack a lot of personality into a heat-sensitive package. That flat face means they can't pant efficiently, so I start flagging caution earlier than most owners expect.
