Seasonal & Weather Details

Allergy Season▾

Akitas have an incredibly dense double coat that traps pollen, dust, and every outdoor allergen. They're moderately allergy-prone. Brush daily during allergy season. Watch for skin irritation under their dense coat — it hides problems until they're advanced.

Best walk times during allergy season: before 10am and after dusk.
Storms & Anxiety▾

Akitas are generally stoic during storms. Their confident, independent personality means they handle thunder better than most breeds. Some become quietly alert rather than anxious. A few individuals are noise-sensitive — they'll show it with pacing, not panic.

Rain & Wet Weather▾

Akitas' double coat has good water resistance — the outer guard hairs shed water well. But in prolonged rain, the undercoat eventually soaks. Their coat takes a very long time to dry. Avoid baths/rain before cold weather — a wet Akita in cold is miserable.

Does Your Akita Need a Coat?▾

Akitas were bred for mountain winters in northern Japan. Their dense double coat handles extreme cold — comfortable well below 0°F. They overheat quickly in summer. Never shave an Akita. Provide AC, shade, and limited exercise above 75°F.

Breed Insights

“Akitas were bred in the mountains of northern Japan to hunt bear, boar, and deer in snow. Their comfort zone is 20-50°F — anything above 75°F is outside their design specs.”
“Their double coat is so dense it's nearly waterproof in moderate rain. Japanese breeders describe it as the breed's "raincoat." But once wet through, it takes hours to dry.”
“Akitas are one of the breeds most prone to zinc-responsive dermatosis — a skin condition that worsens with environmental stress including extreme heat.”
“Like Huskies, Akitas blow their entire undercoat twice a year. During these 2-3 week periods, their temperature regulation is significantly different.”

Frequently Asked Questions

What temperature is too hot for an Akita?▾
Akitas hit caution at just 75°F — similar to brachycephalic breeds, but for different reasons. Their incredibly dense double coat traps heat. Above 80°F, limit walks to 15 minutes. They need AC in summer. Dark-coated Akitas are even more heat-sensitive.
How cold is too cold for an Akita?▾
Akitas handle extreme cold — comfortable well below 0°F. They were bred for Japanese mountain winters and snow. The cold is where they shine. The only concern is ice buildup between their toes on very long walks in deep snow.
Should I shave my Akita in summer?▾
Never shave an Akita. Their double coat insulates against heat and protects from sunburn. Shaving disrupts their natural temperature regulation and the coat may never regrow properly. Brush out loose undercoat instead.
Do Akitas have seasonal allergies?▾
Moderately. Their dense coat traps allergens, and they can develop zinc-responsive dermatosis that worsens with environmental stress. Brush daily during allergy season and watch for hidden skin irritation under their thick coat.
